TAMPA, MARCH 14, 2014 – No. 47 USF dropped a 4-1 decision to No. 6 Illinois Friday afternoon at the Atkins Tennis Center.
“We are disappointed not to come out on top today, but we have a very tough match tomorrow,” said head coach Matt Hill. “Our focus is on Pepperdine. I am excited to see how the team responds tomorrow after the loss today.”
As part of the College MatchDay weekly series, USF and the Fighting Illini began the match with singles and would only proceed to doubles if the two sides were tied afterwards.
Illinois got on the board first at third singles with Blake Bazarnik taking down Vadym Kalyuzhnyy, 6-1, 6-2. At second singles, Oliver Pramming pushed the first set to 7-5 before falling 6-2 in the second. No. 65 Roberto Cid fell to No. 17 Farris Gosea at the top spot to give the Fighting Illini a 3-0 advantage.
Federico Sabogal put a W in the win column for USF besting Julian Chandlers 6-2, 6-3 at sixth singles. Sasha Gozun fell in three sets at fourth singles 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 to give Illinois the match. At the fifth spot, Ignacio Gonzalez-Muniz nearly gave the Bulls another point as he was leading 3-6, 6-3, 5-2 before the match was called off.
USF will have another tough match-up tomorrow afternoon when they take on No. 42 Pepperdine. The match is set to get underway at 1:00 p.m. at the Atkins Tennis Center.
