Former Bulls to Face Off in Flag Football Game

By TOM ZEBOLD

USF Senior Writer

TAMPA, MARCH 27, 2014 – USF football fans, especially those that have been following since the program’s start, are in for a treat during halftime of Saturday’s spring game at Corbett Stadium.

Bulls from past squads will suit up in green and white for a “friendly” USF Alumni Flag Football Game that’s turning out to be very competitive in the days leading up to the opening whistle.

“On our alumni Facebook page we’re going back and forth,” former quarterback Matt Grothe said Wednesday. “I got put on the Green Team and everybody is saying the White Team is better. They do have a pretty stacked team, but I threw a couple shots out there basically saying the White Team better hope they don’t get beat by us because a lot of their guys are not only younger, but they’re still in their NFL training modes.”

Grothe’s Green Team does have six former Bulls from the 1990’s on its roster, but the teams actually have been assembled pretty evenly. The Green Team features speedsters Lindsay Lamar (RB/WR, 2009-12) and Quenton Washington (2009-11) along with a lot of former players that have stayed in good shape over the years.

Grothe, who played at USF from 2006-09, hung up his cleats not too long ago and he’s plenty capable of leading a team to victory. The Lakeland, Fla., native finished his collegiate career as the program’s leader in total yards (10,875), second in passing yards (8,669) and third in rushing yards (2,206).

Grothe and his Green Team will have a pretty tall task ahead of them with the likes of former Bulls linebacker Sam Barrington chasing after them. Barrington is entering his second NFL season with the Green Bay Packers after starting 36 of his 49 collegiate games from 2009-12 and ranking eighth on USF’s career tackles list with 258.

“It should be an exciting day, and with no question it’s all about the defense,” Barrington said.

Grothe does have a point about the NFL experience the White Team has on its roster. Barrington’s teammates include Seattle Seahawks quarterback and Super Bowl champion B.J. Daniels and free agent center Sampson Genus.

Daniels is entering his second year in the NFL after finishing his USF career from 2009-12 with the second-most total yards in school history (10,501), along with ranking third in passing yards (8,433) and fourth in rushing yards (2,068). Grothe and Daniels are tied for second in USF history with 52 passing touchdowns apiece.

“I have a lot more vets on my team, so I’m thinking the old veterans will pull it together and come out with a victory on Saturday,” Grothe said. “We’ve been joking around the last few days about, ‘Who is going to be the first person to get injured?’”

No matter what team ends up with bragging rights Saturday, USF’s stars of the past are looking forward to seeing old teammates and meeting Bulls that helped build the program from the ground up. Eight players from USF’s first team in 1997 will be taking part in alumni flag football festivities and at least one player from each year the Bulls have competed is on a roster.

“Opportunities like this are truly a joy coming back to a place where I spent very significant period of time in my life, and as an alum, who would have ever thought?” Barrington said. “I’m definitely looking forward to seeing all of my former teammates and meeting older players. I think it’s really great what Coach (Willie) Taggart is doing with the program.”

“It’s crazy to see how much has changed over the past year here and to be appreciated like we are as ex-football players being able to come back and be a part of stuff like this is pretty cool,” Grothe said.
