Brooks, Flores Sign With Bulls
The signees adds even more talent to USF’s already-strong signing class, which included Portugal guard Laura Ferreira and Denmark guard Maria Jesperson during the fall signing period.
“I thought one area we needed to improve on for next year is the point guard spot, and I think we did that with Brooks and Flores,” head coach Jose Fernandez said. "We addressed a need at the wings with Jesperson and Ferreira in the fall, and now we added the point guards to the mix. I think all four are going to compete for playing time."
A former teammate of Bulls’ guard Ariadna Pujol, Flores joins the team with some familiarity of USF’s offense. Flores played with Pujol on the 18 and under Spanish National Team, leading Spain to a gold medal with Pujol last summer.
Flores is tabbed as a true scoring point guard, with the ability to hit from beyond the arc, or penetrate and finish around the rim. Flores’ ball-handling skills and passing fit the mold of a strong point guard option, with the speed to help USF push the ball in transition.
Earning first team All-American honors in both years as a junior college player, Brooks joins the Bulls as an immediate impact point guard. Brooks was named North Texas Junior College Athletic Conference Player of the Year as a freshman and sophomore, averaging 18.6 points and 7.0 assists per game at Weatherford College.
"I like how well Laia shoots the ball, making her able to play a combo guard spot as well as the point guard role," Fernandez said. "Having played and had success with Ariadna helps as well, in terms of familiarity."
Brooks is ranked No. 1 nationally at the point guard position by Collegiate Girls Basketball Report, and was named the third-best overall player among junior college prospects. Brooks led her team to a 21-4 record in 2013-14, reaching the second round of the NJCAA Tournament.
"Bre has been an All American the last few years, and she's played in big games against college-caliber players," Fernandez said. "She brings a great deal of experience to our team."
