TAMPA (May 1, 2014) – Loreto Alonso-Martinez was selected to compete in the upcoming 2014 NCAA Singles Championship it was announced by the NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Subcommittee.
The NCAA Singles Championship will be held at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex on May 21-26 in Athens, Ga., following the conclusion of the team championship competition.
Alonso-Martinez started the season playing at the number two singles position before sliding up to number one and rolling full steam ahead. The senior has won all 14 matches playing at the top spot and is currently on a 15-match winning streak, which coincides with the team’s school record 15 match winning streak. Alonso-Martinez is 18-2 this year in dual matches and 18-5 overall. Arguably her most impressive victory to date came against Abigail Tere-Apisah of Georgia State who was ranked 13th in singles and defeated her in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3.
Alonso-Martinez earned the automatic bid from the American Athletic Conference by being named the Most Outstanding Player during the Conference Championship where she went a perfect 3-0 in singles play.
On Tuesday, USF also found out its postseason fate as they will travel to Gainesville to take on Oklahoma State in a first round matchup at 9:00 a.m. on May 10.
