TAMPA, MAY 20, 2014 – USF's Loreto Alonso-Martinez gets to cap off a stellar senior season by competing for a national title at the NCAA Singles Championship.
The American Athletic Conference Player of the Year’s path through the bracket begins 11 a.m. Wednesday against No. 15 USC’s Giuliana Olmos at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga.
“It’s a great feeling. You’ve just got to keep practicing and try to go for it,” Alonso-Martinez said.
Alonso-Martinez is making her first trip to the singles championship after helping the No. 33 Bulls capture The American crown and advance to the NCAA tournament. The Asturias, Spain native is 18-6 overall in singles play this season and had won 15 consecutive matches before falling in the Bulls’ loss to No. 22 Oklahoma State in the first round of the NCAA tournament on May 9.
“It was a really good year. The team atmosphere was perfect with four freshmen and four seniors,” Alonso-Martinez said. “I just think it was a great season because of how the team was structured.”
No. 71 Alonso-Martinez plans to go pro after her NCAA run and she’ll get a tough test right away in Wednesday’s first round. Ranked 60th in the nation, Olmos is 24-10 in her junior season and won the Pac-12 singles championship. Olmos and teammate Kaitlyn Christian also captured the Pac-12 doubles title and they’ll continue their season in the NCAA Doubles Championship this week.
“I’m going to go there and treat it like it’s a normal tournament like the ones we played in the season,” Alonso-Martinez said.
