Four Bulls Earn Spots at NCAA East Preliminary

Michael Babinec, David Bell, Mira Carrozza, and Jada Massie will all represent USF in Lexington, Ky., May 25-27

TAMPA, MAY 18, 2017 – Four University of South Florida track and field student-athletes have qualified for the NCAA East Preliminary May 25-27.

Michael Babinec, David Bell, Mira Carrozza, and Jada Massie will all travel to Lexington, Ky., for the three-day event.

Babinec, a senior from Riverview, Fla., will be participating in the 3k steeplechase. He finished sixth in The American Outdoor Championship (5/13) with a time of 9:30.88. Babinec also owns the fourth-best 3k steeplechase time in program history (9:01.87), set earlier this year at the Pepsi Florida Relays (3/30).

A sophomore from Jacksonville, Fla., Bell was the runner-up in the pole vault at The American Outdoor Championship (5/14) with a height of 16-9.25. He earned all-conference recognition during the 2017 indoor and outdoor seasons. Bell also ranks fourth in the USF history books with a height of 17-1 at the USF Collegiate (4/22).

Carrozza, a senior from Pittsburgh, will be competing in the women's javelin. She finished fifth at The American Outdoor Championship (5/13) with a distance of 142-10. Carrozza owns the second-best program mark in the javelin (153-10) at the IMG Academy Throws Challenge (5/5).

A sophomore out of Bradenton, Fla., Massie posted a season-best 100m dash of 11.57 seconds at the Miami Invitational (3/25). That time is the fifth-best mark in program history.

Since 2010, the Bulls have had 96 student-athletes (53 male, 43 female) earn a spot in the NCAA Preliminary.

The top performers at the University of Kentucky hosted competition will earn a berth to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Ore., June 7-10.

Led by 11th-year head coach Warren Bye, the USF track and field team has produced 21 All-Americans (eight men, 13 women) since 2000 and at least one All-American in nine of the last 10 years. Recent graduate Matthew O'Neal is USF's first six-time NCAA All-American. The Bulls return all-conference performer David Akins (pole vault) and Michael Babinec (steeplechase), as well as NCAA qualifier Bernicia Holifield (hammer throw). The Bulls are home to the 2018 NCAA Track and Field East Preliminary.
