TAMPA, JUNE 14, 2017 – University of South Florida junior shortstop Kevin Merrell (Odessa, Fla.) has been named a Perfect Game/Rawlings Third Team All-American and to the ABCA/Rawlings South All-Region First Team.

ABCA/Rawlings All-Region first-team selections are nominated for ABCA/Rawlings All-America honors. The ABCA/Rawlings All-Americans will be announced on Saturday, June 17.

Just two days after becoming the third-highest drafted player in program history with the 33rd selection of the MLB Draft, Merrell adds to his list of accolades this season. Merrell became the program's 10th All-American on June 8 when he was named to the Baseball America Second Team. He was named to the American Athletic Conference First Team for his sensational junior campaign.

The left-handed hitter became the only player in program history to lead the team in hitting three-straight seasons after batting .384 on the year. The average led The American and ranked inside the top-20 nationally. The average was the 10th-best for a single season in program history.

Merrell led the conference with 1.6 hits per game, a .464 on base percentage and finished second with 0.92 runs per game. He led the Bulls with 48 runs scored, a .569 slugging percentage and 19 stolen bases. Merrell clubbed a career-high 11 doubles and seven home runs.

About USF Baseball

The University of South Florida baseball team is one of the fastest rising programs in the country. Under the guidance of head coach Mark Kingston, the Bulls reached the NCAA Regionals in 2015 for the first time in 13 years and USF followed that success with a 42-19 2017 campaign and second regional trip in three years. The Bulls earned just their second and third wins over top-five teams with a 4-2 victory against then-No. 3 Florida State on Feb. 21 and 15-10 win at then-No. 5 Florida on May 9. The win over FSU was part of the best start in program history thanks to a 19-game winning streak, the second-longest in USF Baseball records. USF reached the 40-win mark for the first time since 1996 and entered the top-25 in the major collegiate baseball polls on May 1 for the first time since 2013.

The USF Baseball program has won five conference titles and the Bulls have made 12 NCAA appearances.
