Football Caps Regular Season With Awards Banquet

TAMPA – The USF football program held their annual awards banquet on Saturday night in downtown Tampa and several players walked away with awards.

Among the highlights was senior LB Brouce Mompremier earning the Lee Roy Selmon Award for the second consecutive year.  Mompremier was forced to end his final collegiate season after a traumatic neck injury. Despite the injury, the Miami native continued attending practice and workouts through the entire fall.

After winning the Defensive MVP in 2007, junior defensive end George Selvie won the Outstanding Front Seven award.  The Defensive MVP went to graduating senior LB Tyrone McKenzie.  McKenzie leads the team with 105 tackles this season, after set the USF single season record with 121 in 2007.

The Defensive Playmaker of the Year was awarded to senior CB Carlton Williams, who has played in 50 career games and started 46.  The Valdosta, Ga., native shifted between strong safety and nickel back for USF this season and led the squad with three interceptions.

Junior WR Jessie Hester ended Matt Grothe’s two-year run as Offensive MVP.  Hester has 53 receptions and 557 yards, both of which are the second best marks in USF history.  Grothe was named the Offensive Playemaker of the Year for the second consecutive season.

Senior OL Matt Huners took the Coaches Award home for the second consecutive season, while true-freshman OL Mark Popek won the Overachiever Award, which is given to the top strength and conditioning performer.

The Bulls will continue preparation for the 2008 magicJack St. Petersburg Bowl on Monday, when they practice from 10 a.m. – Noon.  USF will also hold a press conference on campus in the BIG EAST room at Noon on Dec. 15.

In recognition of the individual who through his efforts on the field and in the classroom distinguished himself as both a quality student and a quality athlete

GREEN & GOLD PRIDE AWARD-  SHAWN CANNON
In recognition of the walk on who through his efforts on and off the field best represents South Florida football with quality play, leadership and work ethic

LEE ROY SELMON AWARD – BROUCE MOMPREMIER
In recognition of the individual who displays the greatest courage perseverance and determination in pursuit of team goals

FIRST TEAMER AWARD- BEN WIILIAMS
In recognition of the player that exemplifies leadership on and off the field, great character, physical and mental toughness. Is dependable and has high academic
standards.

COACHES AWARD- MATT HUNERS
In recognition of the player who makes a substantive yet recognized contribution; a person whose bravery is unknown or unacknowledged

OUTSTANDING DEFENSIVE FRONT SEVEN PLAYER- GEORGE SELVIE
In recognition of the defensive front seven player who demonstrated the most outstanding performance, leadership and effort throughout the season

OUTSTANDING OFFENSIVE LINEMAN- MARC DILE
In recognition of the offensive lineman who demonstrated the most outstanding performance, leadership and effort throughout the season.

OUTSTANDING SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER – MAIKON BONANI
In recognition of the individual who demonstrated the most outstanding performance on Special Teams and took great  pride in making the Special Teams an equal partner to the offensive and defensive units of the Bulls football program

OFFENSIVE PLAYMAKER OF THE YEAR –MATT GROTHE
In recognition of the offensive skill player who showcases his skills and talents by making plays on game day
