TAMPA - The University of South Florida softball team (28-15 overall, 7-4 BIG EAST) suffered their second consecutive BIG EAST conference loss to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish (16-11 overall, 3-1 BIG EAST), 3-2, in the first game on Sunday afternoon.
The Bulls nine hits were not enough as the Irish put together three crucial hits, two solo homeruns by Beth Northway and Dani Miller.
The Bulls cut the two run lead in half on an Alison Savarese single in the fourth inning to plate pinch runner Melissa Rosas.
Junior JoJo Medina looked to rally the Bulls back in the bottom of the seventh with a bases loaded walk. Freshman Gina Kafalas would trot home to put the score at 3-2 with two outs, but the Bulls' rally would end on a Laura Fountain line drive to the shortstop.
Freshman Candace Howell (6-5) received the loss hurling 6.2 innings, giving up three hits, three runs and six walks.
The Bulls look to split the series in game two of the doubleheader.
