Release: 06/22/2011

Bill McGillis joined USF as Senior Associate Athletic Director for External Affairs in May 2007 and was named Executive Associate Athletic Director in July 2008.  He is the sport administrator for the football, baseball and softball programs and is responsible for leading the department's revenue-generating units, including marketing, ticket sales, licensing, merchandising and communications.  McGillis is also responsible for managing the university's corporate sponsorship and broadcasting initiatives with multi-media partner IMG College, as well as USF's apparel and equipment partnership with Under Armour.  In 2008, McGillis began to spearhead the advancement of the department's long-term strategic plan, which included a transformation of the USF Athletics District.

During his tenure at USF, the university has enjoyed extraordinary increases in ticket sales, licensing, merchandising and other revenue streams as a result of an aggressive department-wide effort to capitalize on the Bulls on-field success and rise to national prominence in football.  As the Bulls surged in the national polls, the program emerged as a national leader in attendance and one of the hottest brands in the country. In 2007, USF's increase in football attendance was 53,260 and led the nation, and its 92% increase in merchandise sales and royalties was among the largest increases in the country and moved USF into the Top 50 nationally. Beginning in 2009, USF began its $69 million facelift of the Athletics District which includes new Baseball and Softball Stadiums, Soccer Stadium, Track Stadium, Frank Morsani Football Practice Facility, Tennis Complex, Pam and Les Muma Basketball Center, Sun Dome Arena and the Sun Dome Corral.

McGillis brought to USF over 20 years of administrative experience in intercollegiate athletics, including having served as the Director of Athletics at the University of Evansville from 2002-2007.  While at Evansville, McGillis initiated improvements to the university's basketball, administrative and weight room facilities, increased scholarship support and funding and enhanced the department's infrastructure in an effort to enable sustained competitive success.  The Purple Aces baseball program achieved unprecedented success, winning the program's first Missouri Valley Conference Championship, while three head coaches he hired during his time there were recognized as Missouri Valley Coaches of the Year. Prior to accepting the Director of Athletics' position at Evansville, McGillis spent nearly four years as the Senior Associate Athletic Director at the University of New Mexico, and 13 at the University of Houston.   McGillis' tenure at those two stops coincided with the careers of two all-time college greats, Heisman Trophy winner Andre Ware at UH and Chicago Bear Brian Urlacher at UNM.

McGillis, earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in sports administration from St. Thomas University (FL) and graduated from the Sports Management Institute Executive Program in 1996.  He and his wife Margie, both natives of Seattle, have five children - sons Jordan (22), Taylor (20) and Will (12), and daughters Marissa (16) and Gabrielle (5).
