Former Bulls in Pro Baseball

By TOM ZEBOLD

USF Senior Writer

TAMPA - The 2012 MLB First-Year Player Draft is in the books and the three Bulls selected now know where they'll be starting their professional careers.

Austin Adams was the first Bull to go pro when he was drafted in the eighth round by the Angels and the right-hander has been assigned to the Orem (Utah) Owlz of the Pioneer League (rookie advanced). The reliever posted a 1.82 earned run average with 34 strikeouts in 29 2/3 innings this past season. The Tampa native finished second on the team in saves (5) while opponents batted only .120 off him.

Derrick Stultz went to the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 14th round and the right-hander will start off in Washington with the Yakima Bears in the Class A short-season Northwest League. The right-hander went 9-1 with a 3.29 ERA in 87.2 innings. Stultz's nine victories led the Big East and he capped his year by pitching a complete-game shutout against UConn to help USF reach the conference tournament final

USF ace left-hander Andrew Barbosa, drafted in the 36th round by Arizona, is expected to be a starter for the Missoula Osprey of the Pioneer League (rookie advanced). Barbosa posted a 2.75 earned run average with a Big East-best 110 strikeouts in 95 innings in 2012. He was named to the All-Big East first team after missing most of the 2011 season with an elbow injury.
