TAMPA - Kevin Quackenbush made a name for himself nationally as a top-notch reliever for USF and the right-hander has continued his success on the pro mound in 2012.
The San Diego Padres' eighth-rounder in the 2011 MLB First-Year Player Draft has posted a 0.91 earned run average with 13 saves in 27 appearances for the Lake Elsinore Storm of the Class A Advanced California League and has earned a place in the league's midseason All-Star game. Opponents are hitting just .200 off Quackenbush while the Tampa native has stuck out 33 batters in 29 2/3 innings.
Quackenbush grabbed the attention of pro scouts in 2011 when he set a USF record for relievers with a 0.80 ERA. The Jesuit High School graduate ranked 13th nationally and led the Big East with 12 saves before going pro.
"He has worked so hard. A kid that wasn't drafted out of high school, came to USF, worked tirelessly on the field and in the classroom and developed into one of the best pitchers in college baseball (in 2011)," USF head coach Lelo Prado said at the time Quackenbush was drafted.
