FORT MYERS, FEB. 18, 2014 – The USF Baseball team got another solid pitching performance from its staff as it held Florida Gulf Coast to just one unearned run on five hits in a non-conference match-up Tuesday night at Swanson Stadium in Fort Myers.

Janick Serrallonga (1-0) started the ballgame going five innings to pick-up his first win of the season.  The left-hander allowed four hits and an unearned run in the second inning.  He struck out two batters and issued only one walk.  It was the senior’s third career victory.

Michael Farley, Jordan Strittmatter and Lawrence Pardo closed out the ballgame tossing the final four innings to preserve the win.  Farley went two perfect innings while Strittmatter and Pardo each threw one apiece.

“This was another great win, especially being on the road,” said head coach Lelo Prado.  “Janick pitched great followed by Farley, Strittmatter and Pardo.  We played with great enthusiasm and when we do that, we are a good team.  I can’t wait to finally play at home Friday night.”

Offensively, USF used timely hitting going 6-for-16 (.375) with two outs including scoring three of their five runs.

Nik Alfonso and Michael Arencibia were the catalysts as they both picked up two hits apiece.  Alfonso went 2-for-2 with a run scored and a RBI.  He also was hit by a pitch twice and drew a walk.  Arencibia was 2-for-3 with a walk, two runs scored and a RBI as well.  He had one of the Bulls’ two triples on the night.

Kyle Teaf got things rolling right from the get-go leading the game off with a triple.  He would later score on a double play to give USF a 1-0 advantage.

FGCU capitalized on a defensive miscue by USF in the bottom of the second to knot the game at one-all.  After a walk and single to begin the inning, Tyler Selesky put the ball in play for the Eagles.  Buddy Putnam attempted to get the runner at second but the throw ended up in leftfield allowing Nick Rivera to scamper all the way home for their only run of the game.

A couple of scoreless innings for each side kept the game tied at 1-1 until the fifth inning.  Alfonso started a two-out rally with a single to leftfield followed by a Luke Maglich single down the rightfield line.  Daniel Portales then laced a ball the shortstop couldn’t handle heading into left-centerfield bringing home Alfonso for a 2-1 USF lead.

An inning later, Arencibia drove in the third run of the game on a triple to deep rightfield plating Buddy Putnam, who began the inning with a one-out single.  On the first pitch to Zac Gilcrease, FGCU attempted to pick-off Arencibia at third but the throw sailed into leftfield letting him cross the plate and make it a 4-1 ballgame.

A RBI double in the ninth by Alfonso plated Arencibia for the final run of the game.

The win improves USF’s record to 4-0 on the young season.  It is the first time since 2007 that the Bulls have started the season 4-0.  They began that year 6-0.

Andris Gonzalez suffered the loss for FGCU going 0.2 innings, giving up two hits and an unearned run.  Garrett Anderson started the game tossing the first four innings surrendering a run and four hits.

Kevin Young had the Eagles lone multi-hit performance going 2-for-4.  Rivera plated the only run for FGCU.

USF returns to the diamond on Friday, February 21 when it hosts Penn State in the first game of a three game set at the USF Baseball Stadium.  First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
