The No. 28 University of South Florida women’s tennis team fell 4-2 to No. 13 Georgia Tech on Sunday at the ITA Kickoff Weekend held in Atlanta, Ga.  The loss eliminates the Bulls from contention for a spot at the ITA National Team Indoor Championships and drops head coach Agustin Moreno’s young team to 1-1 on the season.

“It was a very tough, very close match for us today,” Moreno said. “We were close in the doubles and had a couple of second sets in the singles matches that we could have pulled out. We were coming from behind and just a few points could have changed things for us.”

USF dropped the doubles point despite an 8-4 win from the No. 25 ranked tandem of Janette Bejikova and Loreto Alonso Martinez over the No. 66 pairing of Caroline Lilley and Sasha Krupina in the No. 1 spot. Kate Parker and Alessandra Bonte lost their match, 8-4, to the No.  36 grouping of Lynn Blau and Elizabeth Killborn at No. 3, and the 45th-ranked team of Irene Rehberger and Ecaterina Vasenina couldn’t hang on for the point in an 8-5 loss to Viet Ha Ngo and Jillian O'Neill.

The singles wins also came from  Bejikova and Alonso Martinez, with unranked Bejikova earning a 6-1, 7-5 decision over No. 39 Jillian O’Neill in the No. 3 spot. Alonso Martinez dropped her first set to Blau, but rallied to win the match 1-6, 6-3, 6-1 at No. 4.

Vasenina dropped her singles match 3-6, 6-7 to Lilley at No. 2 ; Bonte fell 1-6, 6-7 to Krupina at No. 5, and Parker came up short 4-6, 1-6 to Rocio Alberca Lopez at No. 6.

The No. 1 matchup of No. 25 Rehberger and Ngo went unfinished after the first two sets were split because the team outcome had already been decided.

The Bulls return to action on Feb. 8 when they travel to No. 2 Florida, at 3 p.m. ET.
