The University of South Florida women’s tennis team came up short again vs. a challenging opponent on the road, falling Saturday to No. 29 Virginia Commonwealth, 5-2. The No. 32 Bulls are now 1-5 on the season, but have yet to play a home match or a team not ranked among the nation’s top 50 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.

“This has been a tough stretch for us,” USF head coach Agustin Moreno said. “We’re playing against very good teams, and each of these matches is an opportunity for us. We didn’t take advantage of our opportunity today, so all we can do is move forward and try to take advantage of the next one.”

The Bulls got wins in singles play from their top two players, but couldn’t secure any additional points in doubles or at the bottom of the lineup.   ITA’s No. 52-ranked player, Irene Rehberger, took a win over No. 117 Josefin Hjertquist via injury default at No. 1, and No. 124 Ecaterina Vasenina posted a three-set win over Kateryna Yergina, 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 at No. 2.

Loreto Alonso Martinez fell in three sets to Ana Bara, 6-1, 2-6, 6-1, at No. 3, while No. 62 Janette Bejikova fell to Alex Bara in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2.  Freshmen Allessandra Bonte and Kate Parker didn’t fare much better in their matches, falling 6-4, 6-0 and 6-2, 6-1 to Olga Terteac and Daria Yakavleva, respectively.

In doubles play, the No. 20 team of Vasenina and Alonso Martinez grabbed a win over Herjtquist and Ana Bara, 8-5, but Bejikova and Rehberger fell short, 8-2, to Yergina and Alex Bara and the Parker/Bonte tandem was outmatched by Yakavleva and Manuela Pietzuch, 8-2.

The Bulls play their first home match of the spring season on Wednesday, Feb. 23 vs. Central Florida at 2 p.m. ET. Admission to all USF tennis matches is free.
