TAMPA - - With just one week remaining before the 2008 University of South Florida volleyball team kicks off the regular season, the Bulls will take part in an intrasquad scrimmage on Sat. Aug. 22 at 3 p.m. in the Corral.
The event is open to the public and head coach Claire Lessinger and the team highly encourages everyone to come out and catch a sneak preview of the Bulls.
“The green and gold intrasquad scrimmage is a fun way for us to wrap up pre-season,” said Lessinger. “The players are so anxious to get in uniform and truly compete, it will be like unleashing caged lions. We look forward to creating a match-like environment for the players and showcasing our 2008 squad to our loyal local fans. This will be a great preview to what will take the court on August 29.”
USF will begin play this fall coming off of a 19-10 campaign that marked the school’s most wins in a season since 2002, but will be chasing towards even higher expectations and loftier goals.
The team will be carrying a great deal of momentum into the year after a third place finish in the BIG EAST Championship and will use the experience, along with a veteran team, to make a run at the conference title.
USF will bring back a wealth of letterwinners, 12 in all, including All-American outside hitter Marcela Gurgel, plus three talented newcomers to assemble the 15-player roster. The group not only has experience, but also contains a plethora of talent, height, athleticism, versatility and a high volleyball IQ.
The Bulls will open up the season by hosting the USF Invitational. The four-team field is rounded out by Grambling, Eastern Kentucky and Northeastern.
