CLEARWATER - Despite a terrific pitching performance by freshman Erica
Nunn the Bulls (6-7) dropped their second game of a double-header, 1-0, to UC
Davis at the NFCA Lead-Off Classic.
For the second game in a row USF received a fantastic pitching effort but were unable to come up with the clutch hits they needed.
The Aggies scored the only run of the game in the third when
Chandler Wagner hit an RBI single up the middle to score Christass Castello.
That was the only hit Nunn allowed until giving up an
infield single in the sixth. She had four strikeouts and only gave up one walk
in six innings for USF.
The Bulls had a great chance to take the lead in the third
with the bases loaded and only one out but were unable to capitalize after a fielder’s
choice and a flyout to right field.
USF had another great opportunity in the fourth when
Kourtney Salvarola leadoff the inning with a double to left center field.
However, UC Davis pitcher Justine Vela struck out the next three batters to end
Another rally in the sixth fell just short after Lee Ann
Spivey led the inning off with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt
by Kenshyra Jackson. Unfortunately, Vela got Salvarola to strike out and
Stephanie Medina to flyout to right field to end the threat.
After another leadoff single in the seventh by Courtney Goff
the Bulls ran into a bit of bad luck. Stephanie Juergens hit a blooper to left
field that looked like it would drop for hit when Aggies’ left fielder
Cassandra Ginnis made a great catch and threw Goff out at first for a
game-ending double play.
The Bulls will look to rebound tomorrow morning at 11:30
a.m. against Illinois State in their final game of the tournament.
