TAMPA - USF took No. 17 Kentucky to extra innings but the Bulls were unable
to get back on the winning track Friday afternoon.
The Wildcats put together a four-run ninth inning on the way
to a 6-3 victory at the USF Under Armour Invitational. Nicollete Levine homered
for USF (6-10) in its seventh consecutive loss.
Levine tied things up at 1 in the bottom of the second when
she drove the first home run of her collegiate career well over the wall in
A Lauren Cumbess RBI single gave Kentucky (13-3) a 2-1 lead
in the third before USF starter Lindsey Richardson and Sara Nevins retired 17
consecutive batters. The Bulls tied the game at 2 in the fourth on a double by
A bases-loaded walk by Christian Stokes put Kentucky back
ahead in the ninth and the Wildcats got three more runs on a fielder's choice
and a throwing error to home by USF shortstop Kourtney Salvarola. Nevins (2-4)
took the loss and was charged with only one earned run on one hit.
Lee Ann Spivey scored on an illegal pitch to get things going
for USF in the ninth but Cumbess (3-1) retired the next three batters to end
The Bulls look to
bounce back in game two of their doubleheader 5:10 p.m. Friday against Illinois
back at USF softball stadium.
