CLEARWATER – The
USF softball team capped off a successful weekend with a 2-1 win over the
University of Illinois-Chicago at the Eddie C. Moore Complex.
Sara Nevins pitched four innings in relief to pick up her
third win of the season only giving up four hits and an earned run while
striking out four batters on the night.
Despite the strong pitching performance from Nevins the
Bulls fell behind in the fourth after Jacki Fletcher singled up the middle to score
Melissa Preish from third and give UIC a 1-0 lead.
It didn’t take long for USF to respond as Monica Santos came
up with a huge triple in bottom half of the fourth to score Lee Ann Spivey and
Morgan Litchfield for her third and fourth RBIs of the year. Santos nearly had
an inside the park home run on the play but was thrown out at home to end the
Lindsey Richardson came on to record the final out of the
ball game to pick up her third save of the season for the Bulls. Richardson originally started the came but was replaced by Nevins in the third.
With the win the Bulls finished the Under Armour
Invitational with a 3-1 record and improved their overall record to 9-10. USF
is off tomorrow and will play a double-header against Central Michigan 6 p.m.
Wednesday, March 6 at the USF Softball Stadium.
