The University of South Florida men’s tennis team opened its dual match season with dominant wins vs. Florida A&M and Florida Gulf Coast on Saturday at the USF Varisity Tennis Courts.  The Bulls shutout both opponents with varying lineups in each contest and are now 2-0 on the young season.

“It’s always great to get wins, and we had a couple of good performances today,” USF head coach Don Barr said. “You could tell the guys were a little nervous before the first match, but as the day progressed, they got more comfortable. We were better in the second match because we started to see some improvement in the things we’ve worked on this winter.”

In the afternoon singles matches vs. Florida Gulf Coast, Romain Deridder snagged the first win in the No. 6 spot, dropping Collin Brown 6-0, 6-0.  Wael Kilani was the second to score a point for the team with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Matthew Rock in the No. 1 spot. Federico Sabogal won over Dean Tsamas, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 to clinch the match, and the nation’s No. 114-ranked player, Lucas Jovita, finished off Gabriel Echevery 6-0, 6-0 moments later at No. 3.

Yannick Yoshizawa was the next to dispatch his opponent, winning 6-2, 6-0 over Steve Binninger at the No. 5 spot. Juan Carlos Acuna Gerard beat Mitchell Lvovsky 6-1, 6-0 at the No. 4 spot to wrap up the day.

USF took all three doubles matches vs. the Eagles to claim that point as well.  Jovita and Adderley won first at the No. 1 spot, defeating Rock and Tsamas 8-1. At No. 2, Acuna Gerard and Yoshizawa defeated Echevery and Brown 8-4 to claim the point. The final doubles match wrapped with Deridder and Sabogal outlasting Binninger and Lvovsky, 8-5.

Early in the day, the Bulls made easy work of Florida A&M, winning the doubles point and all six singles matches en route to a 7-0 win.

USF’s first singles win came from Yoshizawa at the No. 6 spot. The junior defeated Temuera Asafu-Adjaye 6-2, 6-1.  Deridder grabbed a second singles point at No. 5 with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Michael Moore, and that victory was followed shortly by the 6-3, 6-2, match-clinching win from Adderley over Takura Happy in the No. 2 spot.

Play vs. Florida A&M finished with Sabogal claiming a 6-2, 6-0 win over Maurice Wamokowa at No. 3 and a pair of three-set matches. Kilani dropped Chidi Gabriel 6-1, 4-6, 6-2 at No. 4, and Jovita defeated Levan Clark in a tiebreak third set 6-4, 2-6, 10-5.

In doubles action vs. the Rattlers, USF’s No. 1 grouping of Jovita and Adderley controlled their match from start to finish, defeating A&M’s tandem of Happy and Gabriel 8-3. The No. 2 team of Acuna Gerard and Yoshizawa secured the point with a 8-4 win over Wamokowa and Asafu-Adjaye. The No. 3 match saw Kilani and Deridder win a tiebreaker 7-5 over Clark and Moore.

USF returns to action vs. Florida Atlantic on Feb. 6 at the USF Varsity Tennis Courts. The match will begin with doubles play at 12 p.m. ET and admission is free.
