In USF's season-opening 67-61 victory on Friday at SMU, sophomore Augustus Gilchrist was a much-improved player from last season, running the floor, scoring and battling in the paint.
In 31 minutes at SMU, the 6-10 forward drained 23 points, pulled down nine rebounds and blocked a pair of shots, leading the team in each category. He hit 8-12 overall, 1-1 from the arc and 6-8 free throws. The 23 points are a career high, and his eight field goals made are his second-most since joining the team in December of 2008.
In his rookie season, Gilchrist led the Bulls in scoring, or tied for the lead, five times:
