Bulls Begin 2017 Outdoor Championships

Diaczynsky, Holifield, and Robinson all post points in the hammer throw

HOUSTON, MAY 12, 2017 – The University of South Florida started the 2017 American Athletic Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Friday.

The Bulls earned their first points of the championship when senior Bernicia Holifield (Tallahassee, Fla.) finished seventh in the women's hammer throw (179-7).

USF then netted another five points in the men's hammer throw when junior Zach Diaczynsky (Naples, Fla.) placed sixth (179-9) and sophomore Bruce Robinson (Little Falls, N.Y.) finished seventh. Diaczynsky's distance was a new personal-best and the fifth-highest mark in program history.

Decathlon Update

  • Sophomore Raekwon Scott (DeLand, Fla.) finished day one in fifth with 3,633 points. Of the five events, Scott placed third in the 100m dash (11.15), long jump (23-5.5), and high jump (6-4.75) events.

Track Qualifying Updates

  • Freshmen Yohance Haynes (1:52.18) and Derwin Moultrie (1:52.28) advanced to the 800m finals on Sunday.
  • Sophomore and Jacksonville native Chelsea Francis (23.91) also earned a spot in the 200m dash finals on Sunday.
  • Senior Khadeeja Dooling (Lauderdale Lakes, Fla.) just narrowly missed advancing to the finals in the 400m hurdles. However, her time of 1:01.81 was good enough for 10th best in program history.

Next Up

The Outdoor Championships continue on Saturday at 1 p.m. with the final events of the men's decathlon (110m hurdles, discus throw, pole vault, javelin, 1500m run).

The field events will start at 3 p.m. with the women's shot put, long jump and javelin. The men's field events begin at 6 p.m. with the long jump followed by the shot put and javelin.

The track events resume at 5:30 p.m.

Led by 11th-year head coach Warren Bye, the USF track and field team has produced 21 All-Americans (eight men, 13 women) since 2000 and at least one All-American in nine of the last 10 years. Recent graduate Matthew O'Neal is USF's first six-time NCAA All-American. The Bulls return all-conference performer David Akins (pole vault) and Michael Babinec (steeplechase), as well as NCAA qualifier Bernicia Holifield (hammer throw). The Bulls are home to the 2018 NCAA Track and Field East Preliminary.
