Bulls Post Strong Marks at Conference Championship

Babinec, Carrozza, Daniels, and Scott all earned points for USF on Day Two

HOUSTON, MAY 13, 2017 – The South Florida track and field team continued the 2017 American Athletic Conference Outdoor Championship with many strong performances on Saturday.

In the women's javelin, senior Mira Carrozza (Pittsburgh) placed fifth with a distance of 142-10. Her performance earned four points for the Bulls.

Sophomore Jonah Daniels (Jacksonville) leapt to a sixth place finish in the long jump. His distance of 24-1.75 is the seventh-best in program history. In the men's 3k steeplechase, senior Michael Babinec (Riverview, Fla.) also placed sixth (9:30.88). Daniels and Babinec each tallied another three points for USF.

Competing all day long, sophomore Raekwon Scott (DeLand, Fla.) set a program record with 6,574 points in the decathlon, earning him eighth in the 10-event competition.

Track Qualifying Update

  • Senior Khadeeja Dooling (Lauderdale Lakes, Fla.) ran the 100m hurdles in 13.89 seconds to advance to the finals on Sunday.
  • Sophomore David Tampa (St. John's, Fla.) qualified for the 1500m finals with a time of 3:58.93. He will also appear in the Sunday finals.


  • Freshman Maurice Nock (Sanford, Fla.) set the eighth-best 400m mark in program history (47.83).
  • Senior Melissa Westmoreland (Jupiter, Fla.) improved on the sixth-best mark in program history with her 11:04.39 performance in the women's 3k steeplechase.

Next Up

The Outdoor Championships conclude on Sunday.

There are eight field events scheduled beginning with the women's high jump at 2 p.m.

The 400m relay will be the first of 20 track events on Sunday. It will commence at 5 p.m.

Led by 11th-year head coach Warren Bye, the USF track and field team has produced 21 All-Americans (eight men, 13 women) since 2000 and at least one All-American in nine of the last 10 years. Recent graduate Matthew O'Neal is USF's first six-time NCAA All-American. The Bulls return all-conference performer David Akins (pole vault) and Michael Babinec (steeplechase), as well as NCAA qualifier Bernicia Holifield (hammer throw). The Bulls are home to the 2018 NCAA Track and Field East Preliminary.
