CORAL GABLES, Fla., MARCH 1, 2017 – Nicole Autrique fired a 1-under 71 in the final round to secure her second consecutive top-10 finish at the Hurricane Invitational on Wednesday.
Autrique’s second under-par round of the tournament moved the senior up six spots on the leaderboard to a tie for ninth place out of 86 competitors. Autrique (+1) finished with a team-high 11 birdies in the fifth top-10 performance of her career.
USF (+37) was just four shots away from its fourth top-10 finish in seven events this season. No. 16 Northwestern (-5) captured the team title and was followed in the top five by Michigan (+2), Louisville (+7), host and 14th-ranked Miami (+13), and Barry (+19).
Sophomore Maria “Nani” Merchan (Venezuela) followed up her second-round 73 with a 77 and tied for 42nd place at 9-over. Playing as an individual, freshman Mariale Merchan tied for 52th place at 12-over, one shot ahead of junior Maria Rodriguez (Colombia).
- Nicole Autrique has matched her career best with two top-10 finishes in a season. The senior from Mexico posted two top-10 performances last season. This is the first time Autrique has produced consecutive top-10 outings.
- Senior Ashley Burke led the Bulls with 37 pars, five away from the tournament lead.
- Senior Taylor Moody and Maria “Nani” Merchan tied for second on the team with seven birdies apiece. Freshman Mariale Merchan collected six birdies in her best finish yet as a Bull (T52).
USF will compete in its fifth event of the spring at the Gator Invitational March 11-12 in Gainesville.
