Burke Leads USF on Day 1 of American Championship

PALM COAST, Fla., APRIL 16, 2017 – Ashley Burke fired a 2-under 70 to lead USF women’s golf in the opening round of the American Athletic Conference Championship on Sunday.
Burke collected three of her four birdies on the front nine and opened the event in a tie for fifth place. The senior from Boynton Beach, Fla., was tied for the lead at 3-under through 12 holes and ended the round four shots away from leader Leonie Harm of Houston.
USF moved into a tie for third place midway through the round and finished the day in sixth place at 8-over. No. 28 UCF (-4) leads the nine-team field with two more days remaining at Hammock Beach Resort’s Conservatory Course (par 72, 6,198 yards). UCF was the lone team to shoot under par in the opening round.
Junior Maria Rodriguez (Cali, Colombia) is tied for 15th place after carding a 1-over 73. Taylor Moody (Plantation, Fla.) posted a counting score for the second consecutive round with a 76 that has the senior tied for 24th place.
- USF is tied for third in the nine-team field with 56 total pars. Rodriguez leads the team with 13 pars.
