Bulls Making the National Scene
The talent pool that is USF women’s soccer isn’t too much of a secret anymore as a number of Bulls have been making a splash on the highest levels of women’s competitive soccer.
For the second consecutive year, USF has sent a player to the U.S. National Team camp in Carson, Calif. Senior goalkeeper Mallori Lofton-Malachi drew praises while training with the national team for two weeks just a year after former Bull Lindsay Brauer. The 2008 W-League goalkeeper of the year was so impressive that US head coach Bill Irwin went as far to say that Lofton-Malachi is “one of the most athletic goalkeepers in America.”
Also making a buzz were a trio Canadians. Sophomore Gina Paceheco, redshirt freshman Bahar Sansar and incoming freshman Taylor Patterson were named to the Canadian women’s U-20 team. Sansar and Paceheo were then promoted to the National team for a series of three friendly matches against the U.S. Pacheco earned her first international cap for Canada.
With the influx of national and international talent flooding the program, it has many asking when USF women’s soccer will explode instead of a matter of if.
Former Bulls Siri Nordby and Kristine Edner has been a staple on the Norwegian National team since graduation. Nordby represented her native Norway last summer in the 2008 Bejing Olympics. Nordby still holds multiple USF scoring records.
