TAMPA, AUG. 19, 2016 – Continuing its mission of winning on and off the field, USF Athletics placed 214 student-athletes on the 2015-16 American Athletic Conference All-Academic team, the conference announced.
The 214 student-athletes to earn the academic honor bettered USF's 2014-15 total by 29 and marked the third straight year in which USF has increased its total. The Bulls ranked fifth in the number of academic honorees among conference members.
USF Athletics teams were led by women's track and field/cross country, which combined to have 45 student-athletes earn all-academic honors, while women's soccer had 22 players earn all-academic honors. USF's other programs also performed well, including men's track and field/cross country (19), softball (16), baseball (12), volleyball (12), women's tennis (11), women's basketball (9), men's tennis (8), men's soccer (7), men's golf (6), women's golf (5) and men's basketball (4).
USF student-athletes posted a combined annual grade-point average of 3.085 for the 2015-16 academic period, the highest on record for the Bulls' athletic program. The Bulls' academic success was led by 249 student-athletes that recorded a GPA of 3.0 or higher in the spring semester, a number that represents over 60 percent of student-athletes enrolled in the spring.
Nominations for the All-Academic Team are submitted by each of the American Athletic Conference's member institutions. To be eligible for the honor, a nominee must have competed in an American Athletic Conference-sponsored sport, attained a minimum grade-point average of 3.00 for the preceding academic year, and completed a minimum of two consecutive semesters or three consecutive quarters of academic work, with a total of 18 semester or 27 quarter credits, not including remedial courses.
The nominations are reviewed and approved by the American Athletic Conference Academic Affairs Committee. There are a conference-record 2,361 honorees for the 2015-16 academic year.
