USF Baseball Summer League Update

TAMPA, JULY 17, 2017 – The Northwoods League has been kind to a pair of University of South Florida baseball members, as summer ball action enters mid-July.   

Northwoods League Update
Rising junior Joe Genord (Lake Worth, Fla.) took a five-game hitting streak into the NWL all-star break, going 8-for-23 (.347) from July 12-16. He hit his eighth homer of the summer on July 13 and tallied four runs, four RBI and three doubles last week. His hitting streak was highlighted by a 3-for-5 effort on Friday with two doubles, three runs scored and two RBI. Genord is batting .278 for the Waterloo Bucks and will participate in Tuesday's NWL Home Run Derby leading the team in homers.
 
Classmate David Villar (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) had six hits last week for the La Crosse Loggers. His week began with a key 2-for-5 day on July 10. Villar hit a grand slam to lead his team to a 9-8 victory. The third baseman tallied three home runs last week, nine RBI and six runs. He is batting .324 with seven doubles, eight homers and 26 RBI entering the NWL Home Run Derby.

Florida Collegiate Summer League Update
Fresh off of winning the FCL Home Run Derby, rising junior Garrett Zech (Naples, Fla.) played in four games last week for the Altamonte Springs Scorpions. He tallied three hits and scored five runs while driving in five runs. Zech hit a home run on July 11 and tallied two runs with three RBI. The Florida League took on the Sunbelt League in the Southeast Prospect Showcase on Saturday. Zech walked twice and scored three runs in the game. On Sunday against the Cal Ripken League in the Summer Showcase, Zech hit a two-run single to help the FCL earn a 4-2 win.   

Collegiate League of the Palm Beaches Update
Rising sophomore Carson Ragsdale (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) saw his league-leading average dip slightly, going just 1-for-5 in three games last week. He hit a double on July 13 and tallied two runs and a RBI. Ragsdale is still batting an astounding .432.

Coastal Plain League Update
Chris Chatfield (Riverview, Fla.) went 2-for-6 in two games last week for the Forest City Owls. He walked twice and scored two runs on July 12. Chatfield is batting .306 during summer ball.      

The Valley League Update
Rising junior lefty Andrew Perez (Orlando, Fla.) struck out six batters in three appearances last week. Though he allowed three earned runs in his first two outings with 3.1 innings of work, he pitched a perfect frame on Saturday with two strikeouts.    

New England Collegiate Baseball League Update

Matt Sellers (Vero Beach, Fla.) pitched for the first time in over a week on July 11. Though he only faced two batters, he struck out both. Over his last two appearances for the Danbury Westerners, Sellers has logged 2.2 innings and has surrendered only one hit with five strikeouts.  

About USF Baseball
The University of South Florida baseball team is one of the fastest rising programs in the country. The Bulls reached the NCAA Regionals in 2015 for the first time in 13 years and followed that success with a 42-19 record and second NCAA regional trip in three years in 2017. The Bulls earned just their second and third wins over top-five ranked teams with victories against then-No. 3 Florida State and at then-No. 5 Florida during the 2017 season. During the 2017 season, USF reached the 40-win mark for the first time since 1996 and entered the top-25 in the major collegiate baseball polls for the first time since 2013. The USF Baseball program has won five conference titles and the Bulls have made 12 NCAA appearances.
