Flowers Named to Walter Camp Player of the Year Watch List

TAMPA, JULY 21, 2017 – Senior quarterback Quinton Flowers (Miami) added a fourth national award watch list to his growing resume on Friday as he was named to the Walter Camp Player of the Year Award Watch List. Flowers becomes the first-ever Bull named to four preseason national award watch lists, having also been named to watch lists for Maxwell, Davey O'Brien, and Johnny Unitas awards.

USF, which was selected the favorite to win the American Athletic Conference by conference media earlier this week, now has eight Bulls named to 13 national award watch lists.

Flowers, the 2016 American Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Year, is one of two players from The American named to the Walter Camp list, joining Houston defensive lineman Ed Oliver. He is one of just four players competing for universities in the state of Florida named to the Walter Camp list.

Flowers and fellow Miami native and senior Bulls' cornerback Deatrick Nichols are both named to at least three national award lists.

The nation's fourth-oldest individual college football accolade, the Walter Camp Player of the Year has been presented since 1967. Louisville quarterback Lamar Jackson was the 2016 winner. Flowers and Jackson were the only two players in FBS football to amass more than 1,500 yards rushing and 2,000 yards passing last season.

USF is now represented on 13 national award watch lists by eight players: senior quarterback Quinton Flowers (Maxwell, Walter Camp, O'Brien & Unitas), senior punter Jonathan Hernandez (Ray Guy), senior running back D'Ernest Johson (Hornung), senior cornerback Deatrick Nichols (Bednarik, Nagurski & Thorpe), senior center Cameron Ruff (Rimington), senior linebacker Auggie Sanchez (Nagurski & Wuerffel), senior defensive lineman Deadrin Senat (Nagurski & Outland) and sophomore tight end Mitchell Wilcox (Mackey).

Flowers heads into his senior season among seven starters returning from a school-record shattering 2016 USF offense that ranked fourth in the nation scoring 43.8 points per game and 11th with 511.5 yards per game. Flowers set USF season records rushing for 1,530 yards and 18 touchdowns, accounting for 4,342 total yards and logging 42 total touchdowns. He completed 62.5 percent of his passes for 2,812 yards and 24 touchdowns against just eight interceptions. He ranked 10th in the nation in total offense per game (334.0 ypg) in 2016. He joined 2016 Heisman Trophy and Maxwell Award winner Lamar Jackson (Louisville) as the only two players in college football to throw for over 2,000 yards and run for over 1,500 yards last year, with Flowers becoming the first player in state of Florida FBS history to break the 2,000/1,000 marks.

ABOUT THE AWARD
Walter Camp, "The Father of American football," first selected an All-America team in 1889. Camp – a former Yale University athlete and football coach – is also credited with developing play from scrimmage, set plays, the numerical assessment of goals and tries and the restriction of play to eleven men per side. The Walter Camp Football Foundation – a New Haven-based all-volunteer group – was founded in 1967 to perpetuate the ideals of Camp and to continue the tradition of selecting annually an All-America team. The Walter Camp Foundation is a member of the National College Football Awards Association (NCFAA), which encompasses college football's most prestigious awards.
