TAMPA, SEPT. 18, 2017 –
The USF Sailing team finished 17th at the Stu Nelson Women's Fall Regatta over the weekend in New London, Conn.

In the fall's opening event, defending ICSA National Finals champions Yale took first place. The deep regatta saw USF finish less than 40 points from a top-10 placement.

NOTABLES
  • Junior Rachel Yannelli (Woodcliff Lake, N.J.) and sophomore Delaney Brown (West Palm, Fla.) finished 18th in the A division.
  • The B division of freshmen Marina Barzaghi (Saunderstown, R.I.) and Katie Bornarth (Stuart, Fla.) shined in their collegiate debut. The two finished 14th with three top-10 results out of the seven races. In the final race, the tandem finished third, but a slight mishap discounted the score.

QUOTABLES

Head coach Allison Jolly on her two freshmen in their first regatta:

"Although the score line doesn't reflect it, Marina and Katie sailed very well. They made some typical freshmen mistakes resulting in some penalty turns and a disqualification in the final race, but those are easy things to correct over the course of the year."

Head coach Allison Jolly on her team moving forward:

"The great news is that everyone went very fast, particularly going upwind, and that is a result of good sail trim and steering. I knew Rachel and Delaney had those traits, but it was nice to see Marina and Katie coordinate together to make the boat sail optimally."
