TAMPA, Aug. 18, 2017 – In its second exhibition match of the season, the University of South Florida men's soccer team will host the University of Tampa in the annual Rowdies Cup match. The Tampa Bay rivals will clash at 7 p.m. Saturday.
 
Prior to the start of the match, alumni from the USF and Tampa soccer programs will play in the first ever Rowdies Cup alumni match. Gates to Corbett Stadium will open at 4 p.m. and the alumni match will begin at 5 p.m. The alumni will play two 25-minute periods.
 
Tickets for Saturday's match will be $5 and can be purchased at the front gate. Fans will also be able to follow the action online in a Facebook Live event. In a special promotion, Nico's Arepas Grill will have a food truck on site.
 
Head coach Bob Butehorn will go toe-to-toe with his alma mater for bragging rights of the best collegiate team in Tampa. Formally known as the Mayors Cup game, the annual rivalry game became the Rowdies Cup in 2005. The game's name was instituted in honor of the Tampa Bay Rowdies 1975 NASL Championship team, which was Tampa Bay's first professional championship team. The Bulls and the Spartans will battle for the 32nd time in program history.
 
USF is fresh off a 4-0 exhibition win over Eckerd College on Tuesday, when 19 different Bulls saw action. Freshman Trey Jackson (Ocala, Fla.) led the Bulls' offensive effort with two goals. Senior Bradley Farias (Indiantown, Fla.) added one goal and one assist.
 
The Opponent
Tampa ended the 2016 season ranked No. 9 in the NSCAA DII Poll after advancing the NCAA quarterfinals. Tampa finished the season with a 13-5-3 overall record, which included victories over five nationally-ranked opponents.

On Dec. 18 Bob Butehorn was appointed the head coach the USF men's soccer program. A member of the University of Tampa's 1981 national championship team and a three-time conference coach of the year, Butehorn previously led Florida Gulf Coast University's men's soccer program to six conference regular season championships, four NCAA Tournament appearances and Top 25 rankings in five seasons since 2010.
 
The Bulls concluded the season as The American regular season champions and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. The Bulls finished the season with a 10-6-4 overall record and a 6-1-0 mark in the American Athletic Conference.
